Quick and Easy Insulation Fixes for Your Doors and Windows

Insulation is a necessity, especially if you live in areas where extreme temperatures are the norm. A well-insulated home doesn’t just keep your indoors comfortable—it also helps you save money on your utility bills.

Investing in an energy-efficient window replacement is just one of the many ways you can improve your home’s insulation. Here are some of our recommendations:

Entry Doors

If your doors were built in the last few years, they may have insulation built in. Insulated doors aren’t as effective if there are gaps between the door and the frame, however. Most hardware and home improvement stores sell draft excluders, which work as a quick-install weather seal. If your door is due for replacement, look for replacement doors with similar weather seal features, like the sweep watershed feature on replacement entry doors offered by our parent company, Andersen Corporation.

Windows

Check the area around the window frames; if you feel a draft, the seals have likely failed and have become an escape route for your indoor heating. While this is typically a sign that you need window replacement, it can also be a sign of improper installation on relatively new windows. Caulk or sealants work as a quick-fix for out-of-warranty of windows; check with your window provider first regarding your warranty. Also, remember that some types of sealants produce acetic acid and emit a strong vinegar smell as they cure.

If your windows are due for replacement, consider two things: the window materials, and the warranty coverage. With regards to materials, your windows should have dual-pane Low-E glass and insulated frames. To protect yourself against improperly installed windows, make sure your warranty has workmanship coverage. Renewal by Andersen replacement windows come with a transferable limited warranty that includes a two-year workmanship warranty.
