3 Common Door Problems During Winter

Entry doors have to put up with a lot during the winter, from strong winds to ice and snow. If your door is showing signs of serious wear and tear, it might be time to consider a new door installation.

Today, Renewal by Andersen® of Portland discusses common door problems you can expect during the colder months of the year.

Icy Locks

One of the most common issues you might encounter icy or frozen door locks. This occurs when locks of your door accumulate too much moisture that then freezes. This can prevent your entry and patio doors from operating the way they should.

You can unfreeze the lock by heating the key and using that to melt the ice. As for dealing with accumulated dirt and oil, you’ll need to take apart the lock in order to clean it out.

Misalignment

Misalignment is most common with wooden replacement windows and doors. Wood expands and contracts depending on the weather. It can also soak up moisture if the door is regularly exposed to wet conditions.

One of the ways you can deal with this is by replacing your doors with a material that doesn’t absorb as much moisture. Otherwise, you may have to hire the services of a specialist to help you correct misalignment issues.

Fading Colors

Door colors tend to fade when the material is continuously exposed to inclement weather. The best way to address this is by coating the door with paint that is moisture-resistant. Alternatively, you can invest in a fiberglass door that’s designed to resist fading.

At Renewal by Andersen of Portland, we know that keeping your doors working flawlessly throughout the winter season boils down to preparation and proper maintenance. So if you’d like us to help you address any of the above issues and more, give us a call at or fill out our contact form for a consultation. We serve residents of Portland and Wilsonville.
