How to Match New Windows to Your Roof

Your windows do more than just let in light and provide impressive views of your outdoor space; they also contribute much to the curb appeal and overall aesthetics of your home. That’s why when you’re planning on doing window replacement, it’s important that your new windows match the most noticeable part of your home that can be seen from the curb–the roof.

In this post, Renewal by Andersen® of Portland shares some tips to keep in mind to ensure that your new windows match the roof.

Matching Styles

Your choice of style for window replacement must match the established aesthetics of the roof. Gable roofs, for example, boast a turn-of-the-century design, so you’ll want to complement this with windows that have a more classic or mid-century look. Good examples include the standard double-hung, bay and bow, and casement windows.

In contrast, modern homes with low-slope or completely flat roofs are better paired with sleeker, more minimalist window styles, with the most common choices being sliding and picture windows.

Frame and Roof Color

The color palette of your windows is another important consideration. It’s a common misconception that exterior elements such as the roof, doors and siding should all match. In truth, a good contrast is better since colors that match and blend too well make for a boring exterior.

Keep in mind that there’s a fine line between beautiful contrast and mismatched colors. A good contrast isn’t exactly two colors on opposite ends of the color wheel. Rather, you can achieve an attractive look by using complimentary colors. For example, brown and grey aren’t exactly contrasting colors, but they’re far apart from one another in terms of tone, so they make a great two-tone color palette with a noticeable contrast.
