Is Replacing Windows Before Selling Your Home a Good Idea?

So you’ve decided to put your home on the market. You probably have a ton of things to fix to make your house more appealing. After all, an attractive, well-maintained home is likely to sell much faster and for a better price. One thing you may be considering is having your windows replaced. But are replacement windows really worth it? And can it really make a difference with prospective buyers? Here are our two cents.

Benefits

First off, let’s talk about the benefits of replacing your windows before selling. If your home has old, worn-down windows, it will give potential buyers the impression that it is a fixer-upper, whereas, having brand-new windows sends a message that your house is well-kept and energy-efficient.

In fact, according to a survey conducted by the National Association of Homebuilders in 2017, a home with modern, energy-efficient replacement windows is ranked as more desirable by up to 90 percent. This, of course, is likely to translate into a quicker sale.

Drawbacks

To be honest, the only real drawback of having your windows replaced before selling is the cost. An average window replacement job will cost you about $600 per window. If you have wood windows, the price can balloon up to $900.

If you are having a hard time deciding, one useful tip we can give you is to try to look at your home in the eyes of a buyer. If you feel like the windows are going to be an issue that could prevent the sale, then by all means have them replaced – provided you have the budget, of course.
