How Should You Leave Your Windows When It’s Hot?

It’s been debated if you should open your windows when it’s hot. Should you do just that or keep them closed? As the heat can be very stressful, doing the right thing can help cool off your home. To finally answer the question, replacement windows expert Renewal by Andersen® of Portland discusses this and more.

Your windows directly affect the temperature inside your home. They are responsible for insulation and air circulation. To answer simply, how you leave your windows during the heat depends on your situation. You have to consider your area’s climate, home structure and personal preference. These things will determine what’s more suitable for you.

Leave It Open

It makes more sense to leave your windows open if the air outside is cooler compared to the temperature inside your home. Keeping the windows open will invite the fresh air inside, cooling down your home. However, for security reasons, be mindful of keeping your windows open. It’s advised that higher-placed windows are much safer to leave open at night. Consider installing energy-efficient replacement windows that can help your home’s temperature. You may also want to improve your home’s ventilation if the heat inside is unbearable.

Leave it Closed

Meanwhile, if your home is well-insulated, you may leave your windows closed. During the heat, it’s best not to open your windows if your HVAC system is keeping the temperature cool inside. If the temperature outside is hotter, opening your windows will only stress your HVAC system. Stressing them will only increase your energy bill. Your air-conditioned home should be kept insulated. You may also consider smart windows that deflect heat to help you maintain the cool temperature inside.
