Thinking of creating a daylighting system for your new home or remodeling project? Take advantage of your windows. With the right window placement and product, you can create a more productive and comfortable indoor environment while significantly reducing your energy costs.
In today’s blog, your window replacement expert shares how you can use your windows for effective daylighting.
Whether you’re building a new home or remodeling, you need to plan ahead. Evaluate your living space and the illumination requirements of each room. Prepare detailed schematics to address any requirements and any opportunities for illumination that certain rooms may have. From there, you’ll know where to place replacement windows to maximize your daylighting system.
Avoid putting replacement windows next to single walls. Instead, place your windows adjacent to side walls wherever possible. Doing so will reflect daylight deeper into the room where the window is in and also provide better distribution of natural light.
Place your windows so that a significant portion of the glazing is positioned above the midpoint of the wall. The greater height of the windows will cast daylight deeper into the room. The general rule for rooms with windows on just one side is to position at least 30% of the window on the upper third of the wall.
Compared to standard windows, windows with high-performance glazing will admit more light to a room. The great thing about high-performance glazing is that it keeps the heat out while letting the light in.
