Should the Window Trim Match the Sash?

During a window replacement project, you’ll have to make lots of decisions, including choosing a color for your window trim. Should you match it to the color of your sash or opt for contrasting hues? To ensure that you are picking the right colors for your windows, Renewal by Andersen® of Portland shares a few tips below:

Trim vs. Sash

Here’s a simple refresher about two essential components of windows: the trim and the sash. The trim, also called the casing, is the part that frames out a window opening. It is considered a final touch to window design. Meanwhile, the sash is the frame that houses the window glass. It is an operable part of a window, which means it is designed to move together with the glass.

Should the Colors Match or Contrast?

Window replacement experts typically recommend using contrasting colors for the trim and sash — especially in the case of tall or large homes where the facade needs to be broken up to create a balanced look.

Nevertheless, there are a few exceptions to the rule. For instance, newer window models are usually designed with extra built-in trim elements. With these additional framing pieces, using a contrasting color for the trim can make your window look overdesigned and clunky. In this case, it would be best to use the same color as the sash.

Another consideration that you might want to make is the color of the surrounding siding. The outer trim can be painted with the same color used for your siding if you wish to have a clean and sophisticated exterior.
