Summer Maintenance Tips for Your Windows

While the COVID-19 pandemic has made many traditional summer activities difficult, there are some things that you can still do, such as window maintenance. Local replacement window and door installation company Renewal by Andersen® of Portland shares summer window maintenance tips below.

Remove Dirt and Debris

Dirt and debris tend to collect on the window sill, as well as in tight crevices such as the area between the window sash and glass. If you have sliding windows, dirt and grit may get caught in the bottom track, making the unit difficult to open and close. The first step of cleaning your windows is brushing out the dirt with a clean, dry paintbrush.

Clean the Windows

If you have Renewal by Andersen windows, cleaning will be really easy. Most of the dirt can be washed off using a garden hose from the outside or simply with a sponge and a bucket of water. A cleaning solution made of dish detergent and water helps remove dirt from tight corners. If cleaning the windows from the yard isn’t an option, no problem: most of today’s windows are equipped with removable or reach-around sashes, making it easy to clean the outside of the window from inside your home.

Replace Weatherstripping

Weatherstripping is the rubber or metal component that seals the gaps between window sash and frame when closed. It can get worn out over time, but is easy to replace. You can purchase rubber weatherstripping at your local hardware store, and it’s very easy to install.

Check for Leaks

Check your windows for signs of water leaks. This can happen even on new windows, so it’s not usually something to worry too much about. Sometimes gaps between window sashes occur when the window hardware alignment is slightly off or when the frame material slightly shrinks from the outdoor temperature. Your replacement windows contractor can help walk you through adjusting window hardware, as well as any other adjustments needed.
