Will Homeowner’s Insurance Cover Window Replacement?

Window replacement can be costly, so many homeowners understandably want to see if the investment might be covered by their homeowner’s insurance. Read on as we share a quick guide to this issue.

Understanding Insurance

Your homeowner’s insurance is a type of property insurance that covers losses and damages to your place of residence. This may include different assets in your home such as furnishings and other material possessions. This protects your home against damage and/or theft and provides liability coverage.

Understanding the Coverage for Damaged Windows

Your homeowner’s insurance will only cover replacement windows in certain circumstances:

  • A named-peril policy protects losses by perils that are explicitly listed in the policy, which means your damaged windows might not be covered depending on what caused the damage.

  • An open-peril policy is for the damage caused by various risks to the insured property. Your damaged windows are more likely to be covered by this type of policy.

Remember that damages following hailstorms or other severe weather events are typically covered by both policy types. However, neither policy is likely to protect against damages caused by wear and tear, as it is the homeowner’s responsibility to maintain windows.
