4 Factors That Make Patio Doors Energy-Efficient

If you’re planning a door or window replacement project, it’s important to prioritize energy efficiency. In today’s post, we discuss four factors that impact the energy efficiency of patio doors.

1. Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) – This is a measurement of how well your door can prevent solar heat from entering your home. The lower a door’s SHGC is, the less solar heat it transmits and the greater its shading ability is.

2. U-Factor – This measures the rate at which your patio door transfers heat. The lower the U-factor, the better the door will be at insulation and lowering your home’s cooling costs. To install a patio door with a low U-factor, simply turn to the door and window replacement pros of Renewal by Andersen® of Portland.

3. Glazing Level – This refers to the quality of the glass. Look for a door with a high-performance glass package to maximize energy efficiency in your home.

4. R-Value – This indicates how well the door can prevent heat from escaping your home. Depending on the materials used, this value can range between R-5 and R-6. Unlike the U-Factor and SHGC, the higher the R-value is, the better your door will be at insulating.
