4 Tips on Getting Spotlessly Clean Windows

Keeping all the windows in your home spotlessly clean can take a lot of work, but is ultimately rewarding. In this blog, window replacement company Renewal by Andersen® of Portland shares some tips on how to get spotlessly clean windows.

  1. Clean Your Windows At Least Twice a Year — The more often you clean, the easier they are to keep clean. Windows that haven’t been cleaned in a long time accumulate dirt on the glass, which can be difficult to remove with soap and water. Keeping a regular routine means you only have to deal with dirt that hasn’t settled, which can be removed with just running water from a garden hose.
  2. Don’t Clean on Sunny Days — As a rule of thumb, never leave water to dry on your windows. Once water spots form on the glass, they are difficult to remove. Before moving on to the next window, make sure all the water is removed using a squeegee, and wiped with a soft dry cloth for good measure. If your windows are up for replacement, consider investing in “self cleaning” windows. Renewal by Andersen replacement windows feature High Performance™ Low-E4® glass packages with a metal oxide exterior coating. This layer, when activated by sunlight, helps remove up to 99% of dirt and water spots.
  3. Never Use Abrasive Cleaners — Some homeowners resort to using scrub pads when trying to remove stubborn dirt, but it can permanently etch the window glass. If soap and water can’t remove grime, add white vinegar or ammonia to your solution, wait a few minutes then try again. Never use white vinegar or ammonia undiluted, as this may damage parts of the window.
  4. Invest in Easy to Clean Windows — Investing in easy-to-clean replacement windows can save you a lot of future headaches. In addition to the aforementioned metal oxide coating, look for low-maintenance frames and sashes, like our own Fibrex® material. Windows with sashes that can be moved out of the way can make upper-story windows easy to clean from the indoors. Our sliding, double-hung and casement windows feature removable, tiltable and reach-around sashes, respectively.
