Common Casement Window Problems and How to Fix Them

Casement windows can develop problems due to wear and tear over the years. Renewal by Andersen® of Oregon & SW Washington is always ready to work with you if you need a casement window replacement, but before that, you can try a few things to remedy the problem yourself. Read on for some tips.

Difficult to Open and Close

Old casement windows may be difficult to open and close. First, check to make sure the window locks aren’t engaged. Don’t force the lock if it won’t open easily, as doing so could cause further damage. Check your care and maintenance manual to find out what lubricant to use and how to apply it. If the problem persists, have the window lock replaced.

In some cases, the lock is fine but the window won’t open even when it’s unlocked. If this happens, gently but firmly push the casement window sash. Again, don’t force it if it won’t budge. The hinge arms could be stuck or damaged at this point. The hinge assembly may need to be dismantled. Call your window professional for repairs. Certain limited warranties include coverage of window hardware issues. Don’t hesitate to call Renewal by Andersen of Portland.

Stripped Window Crank

If your casement windows won’t open or close even when the window crank is turning, this typically means the gears have been stripped. Depending on the type of mechanism your casement window has, you may be able to remove the handle, unscrew the outer casing and inspect the operator assembly. Assuming the window hardware is out of warranty, you should be able to order replacement parts for it through your replacement windows contractor. Give us a call rather than trying to fix this yourself.

Perpetually Dirty Window Exterior

Casement windows are typically hinged at the sides, and when opened, there’s very little space between the sash and the frame. Cleaning the window exterior can be difficult, or in the case of upper-story windows, even dangerous. Of course, you can always hire professional window cleaners to make them shine once again.

Replace your old casement windows with Renewal by Andersen products, which feature hinges that allow a gap between sash and frame. This lets you easily clean your casement windows from indoors. Our other operable window styles likewise have sashes that can be tilted or removed for safe and easy cleaning.
