Extreme temperatures can escalate the wear and tear process on windows, with cold weather particularly damaging. Here’s how the effects of the cold can damage windows, especially those made from wood and vinyl:
Freezing conditions increase the chance of condensation. When the window’s outside surface temperature drops below dew point, the moist, indoor air will liquify upon touching the window. When it’s too cold, the droplets of water can crystallize, forming frost. Unless you have replacement windows with great condensation resistance, this process will lead to paint peeling.
Wood and water should never mix. Even treated timber will one day succumb to moisture damage and rot. If you have old, faulty wood windows, it’s best to replace them with a more durable material.
