Damaging Effects of Cold Temperatures on Windows

Extreme temperatures can escalate the wear and tear process on windows, with cold weather particularly damaging. Here’s how the effects of the cold can damage windows, especially those made from wood and vinyl:

Peeling

Freezing conditions increase the chance of condensation. When the window’s outside surface temperature drops below dew point, the moist, indoor air will liquify upon touching the window. When it’s too cold, the droplets of water can crystallize, forming frost. Unless you have replacement windows with great condensation resistance, this process will lead to paint peeling.

Rot

Wood and water should never mix. Even treated timber will one day succumb to moisture damage and rot. If you have old, faulty wood windows, it’s best to replace them with a more durable material.

Hardware Failure

Made from metal, window hardware is another favorite victim of moisture damage due to perennial condensation and frost. Fortunately, many replacement windows these days come with finishes that can stand the test of time. They have a protective coating to remain in good condition even with extreme temperature variations.

Cracking

One of vinyl’s downsides is its high expansion and contraction rate. Extreme changes in temperature can cause it to bow and crack over time, losing its weathertight seal. This is why it’s not uncommon for vinyl products to become leaky as they age.

At Renewal by Andersen of Portland, we offer replacement windows built to withstand the effects of extreme cold. Our exclusive composite Fibrex® frame material has the rigidity and stability of wood, enabling it to stay airtight, combined with vinyl’s resistance to decay. We capitalize on an argon gas filling to increase the condensation resistance of our glass. Finally, our hardware is available in our Estate™ Collection of metallic finishes that resist tarnish and corrosion.
