How to Detect Leaks in Your Window’s Seals

People are quick to blame their home’s air conditioning system for issues with interior temperature, but the culprit may be elsewhere. What if you’ve done all the necessary checks on your HVAC system and your home is still overheating in the summer? It may be time to check your window seals for leaks.

Whenever there’s a leak in the seal between your panes, you can nip this potential problem in the bud by calling in for a professional window replacement. The only problem is leaks in the seal can be a little difficult to locate. Here are few useful tips from Renewal by Andersen® of Portland to help you determine if your window seals are leaking and what you can do about it.

Visual Inspection

Before you call for professional help, check for obvious signs of leaks. It’s not uncommon for seal leaks to occur, but they are tricky to find. One sure sign is moisture. Windows are typically made with two panes separated by an inert gas like argon or krypton. The gas makes your windows thermally secure, to maximize heating indoors. If you notice fogging between the panes, this is a sure sign of leakage.

Distorted Reflection

For larger window panes, you can stand at a distance (about five to six feet) away and look at your reflection. Whenever there’s a leak, the space between the panes is not refilled by air. Because of this, you can notice a slight distortion in reflections on the glass panels. If you can’t see one but suspect your windows are exhibiting signs of it, window replacement experts can detect such minute warping.

Warranty-Coverage

Now for some good news—leaks in the window seal do not mean your installation was done poorly. Leaks are signs of product failure, and warranties cover this kind of malfunction.
