How to Maximize the Natural Light From Windows

If you’re looking to increase natural lighting in your home, there are certain styles of windows that can help. However, interior design is another factor to take into account, as this can sometimes restrict the entry of sunshine into your home.

To enhance daylighting through window replacement, Renewal by Andersen® of Portland shares some practical tips:

Place Mirrors Strategically

Putting a mirror adjacent to a window allows the sunlight to bounce around the room. This is an elegant solution for space-strapped areas, like tiny bathrooms. When hung on the opposite wall, the mirror will emulate the window, reflecting the view and the sunshine coming from it. Even if you only have one window in the room, the mirror will make it seem like you have several.

Install Reflective Surfaces

Building materials with reflective surfaces can help disperse the light passing through your windows. Shiny flooring and glass furniture can scatter a beam of sunshine in different directions, brightening the space. Think about items with reflective properties when planning your window replacement project.

Use Lighter Paint on the Ceiling

Color affects the way we perceive the light. Generally, darker hues absorb light, making the room feel less illuminated. If you already have dark walls, paint the ceiling with a lighter color to balance the dimness of the space. Also, consider using matte paint because of its reflective property.

Avoid Opaque Window Treatments

If privacy is a concern, invest in translucent window coverings for privacy without sacrificing daylighting. In areas where the view isn’t too important and privacy is a top concern, like the bathroom, consider installing translucent glass. When you turn to Renewal by Andersen of Portland for window replacement, you can choose from a variety of patterns, including Cascade and Fern. Our translucent glass options will reduce window visibility while allowing abundant daylighting.
