Window Comparisons: New Construction vs. Replacement

New construction windows are installed in new homes, while replacement windows are used in remodeling projects. Here’s what you need to know about the differences between these window types.

About New Construction Windows

New construction windows are used when building new homes or home additions. Thy are installed directly on the framing using a nail fin frame. Once installed, the builders proceed with the completion of the home exterior.

New construction windows can also be used during home renovations, but a contractor would need to remove the exterior siding to expose the home’s frame before installing the unit. Unfortunately, this may be impossible to do if the home is made of brick or stone—it can’t be removed in the same way that vinyl or wood siding can.

About Replacement Windows

Replacement windows are designed to replace existing window units. Also called retrofit windows, these are the types of windows typically used in home renovations. Like new construction windows, they come in many sizes and shapes. The notable difference, however, is that replacement units can be custom-made to fit the existing dimensions of the window opening.
