Winter Maintenance Tips for Sliding Windows

Sliding windows contribute to your home’s energy efficiency, beauty, comfort and value, making them an excellent investment. Their wide glass area increases the amount of natural lighting in a room, opening up the space. The only downside is that frigid outdoor temperatures can sometimes cause sliding windows to stick, making them difficult to open. Read on as Renewal by Andersen® of Portland, the leading window replacement contractor, suggests ways to solve this problem:

Clean Them Regularly

Sometimes, your windows get stuck because of built-up dirt and debris in the tracks. Winter’s extreme weather conditions can worsen this problem, so be sure to clean your windows regularly throughout the winter. Simply wipe down the tracks with warm water and soap to keep them free from any obstructions.

Improve Their Insulation

Even the most durable windows aren’t immune to the cold. One way to prevent them from freezing shut is by improving their insulation. Applying an insulating lubricant like WD-40 to the tracks can boost their protection. This is especially helpful for older units, but you can also do this with new replacement windows to help maintain their condition.

Prevent Condensation

On particularly cold days, we recommend leaving your windows open for a few minutes to help vent the humidity that has built up inside your home. This helps prevent condensation on the glass, reducing the risk of your windows getting stuck. If you have window treatments like drapes or blinds, we recommend keeping them open as much as possible to allow the warm air inside your home to heat the glass.

Call a Professional

If your window won’t operate and reducing the humidity doesn’t solve the problem, there may be a structural problem with the window. Left unaddressed, this can drag down your home’s comfort and make your energy bills soar. Keep your home cozy and protected by turning to Renewal by Andersen of Portland for energy-efficient replacement windows.
