Working With Small Kitchen Windows

The kitchen is an area of the home that benefits immensely from plenty of natural light. Not only does natural lighting make it easier to see what you’re doing during the day, but it also provides a cheerful ambiance, which makes the kitchen a more pleasant space for both food prep and mealtime. But what if your kitchen windows are on the small side? Today, Renewal by Andersen® of Portland explains how to make the most of small kitchen windows.

Keep Window Treatments to a Minimum

You already have a small window opening so you don’t want to impede any more natural light coming through with bulky window treatments. If your kitchen windows look stark on their own, you can soften their appearance with a fabric valance. It will cover just the top of your windows so you’re not sacrificing natural light. If you want more privacy, opaque shades are a great option to consider. They block the view into your home while still allowing diffused natural lighting.

“Trick” the Eye

You can maximize natural lighting provided by your kitchen windows and patio doors by replacing solid cabinet doors with glass door fronts. This will result in a deeper perspective of the room and will also help reflect the natural light throughout the room. Your walls will appear farther apart as well, opening up your kitchen.

You can also create a feeling of spaciousness in your kitchen by utilizing reflective surfaces like glass tiles and stainless steel. They will amplify illumination provided by natural and artificial light, making your kitchen seem bigger.
