Exploring Hardware Options for Replacement Windows

Accessories and hardware add an extra layer of functionality to your replacement windows. Locks and latches give you more control over the movement of operable parts, while grilles and bars serve both decorative and security purposes. If you’re in the market for new windows, it pays to explore the many customized hardware options available to you.

With so many different styles to consider, it can certainly be confusing, especially for first timers. Today, Renewal by Andersen® of Portland reviews the basics on accessorizing your replacement windows.

Double-Hung Windows

Let’s start with one of the most prolific styles of replacement windows—the classic double-hung. These windows are so named for their dual operable sashes. Most hardware associated with double-hung windows revolves around these sashes. For example, sash locks allow for greater control of the up and down motion of either the top or bottom sash. Should you want to keep the bottom sash open, you can lock it in place with a custom latch at the top edge of the frame.

Casement Windows

Casement windows are second only to double-hung windows in popularity. Their unique hinged operation allows for more versatile hardware options. One particularly useful accessory is called a casement stop or casement stay that gives you the ability to partially open the hinge to let in just the right amount of air.

Security Grilles

Adding security grilles to your replacement windows can round out their overall finished look as well as enhance security. Grilles help keep intruders out and reduce the risks of someone falling out of a window. They’re often attached to the frame itself and can be made to be stationary or operable.
