What to Ask Your Window Contractor Before Your Project Starts

Installing replacement windows is complex work that requires the hand of an experienced professional. To ensure the best results for your project, it’s a good idea to ask your contractor a few questions before the work begins.

Credentials

In many states, contractors must have licenses. For your protection, make sure you hire a licensed contractor that carries valid insurance, which covers liability, workers’ compensation, and property damage.

In addition, ask for manufacturer certifications. Choose factory-authorized installers, as they have undergone proper training to install the products they carry.

Services

Not all contractors offer full services. Some offer both interior finishing and painting in their window or door installation projects. Make sure to ask what services are part of the project. Ensure that they’re added to the itemized estimate if they aren’t already there.

Contract

The contract should cover itemized estimates of expenses projected for your project. It must include parts, labor and even clean-up. A trustworthy contractor will be ready to give you the breakdown.

Warranty

Problems with your new windows patio doors may arise later. Ask your contractor for a detailed warranty policy in case you need it. Be sure to keep your contractor’s contact information in a safe place. If you notice drafts in your home a few months or even years after the windows were installed, you need to know whether the warranty covers that issue. Most manufacturers guarantee their products for 10 to 20 years assuming there was a “proper installation.” You may get a better warranty with a factory-authorized installation.
